The regions of Asia

In addition to defining the concept of geo-cultural area, the French Network for Asian Studies defines and uses precise nomenclature of the organization of areas. This nomenclature, following discussions and reflections with researchers and experts, can be challenged in the future.

For the French Network for Asian Studies, the western limit of Asia is defined by Siberia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Unlike some definitions, the Pacific is not included in Asia which thus stops in southeast Indonesia (and the far northeast of Russia).

Definition of the naming system

Geocultural area

This generic term encompasses  all levels detailed below.

Continent

This term refers to the traditional geographic sense of a continet. There exists six of them: Africa, America, Antarctica, Asia, Europe and the Pacific -Oceania.

Region

The term is defined as a subset of a continent made up by a group of countries.

The Asian continent is formed by four regions:

Pays ou territoires extracontinentaux

If the concept of a country is easy to understand, it is necessary to introduce better representation of "extra continental territory". These areas of a continent are under the sovereignty of another country.

The most obvious example is the French overseas territories in the Pacific which consist of New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna, and  Easter Island (Chilean territory). Another example is the Pacific US territories which include  Hawaii (one of the fifty US states), Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa and minor outlying Islands of the United States.

We also will consider the Russian federal districts of the Urals, Siberia and the Far East which are extracontinental territories.  This thereby takes into account the nature of both European and Asian time of Russia. The districts of the Urals and Siberia are also treated as a single territory, because of their common association in Central Asia.

Subregion

The sub-region is a territory that covers several countries, but does not include them as one entity. It usually is limited to a single continent. However, exceptions may be made.

For instance, Kashmir is a subregion that covers part of India and Pakistan,  Borneo is a subregion that covers part of Indonesia and Malaysia. However, Brunei is an entire sultanate The Asian-Pacific exception involves New Guinea which is divided between Indonesia (Asia) and Papua New Guinea (Pacific - Oceania).
