Lecturer in Contemporary Art | SOAS
The School of Arts seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Contemporary Art in the Department of the History of Art & Archaeology. You will provide expertise and carry out research in the field of contemporary art and art theory. You will specialise in one or more of the regions of the SOAS remit, complementing related existing specialisms in other areas of the Department and of the School of Arts, e.g., in film and screen studies and music. In teaching, the appointee will contribute primarily to our taught courses and supervision in contemporary art and in art theory and method on BA, MA, PGDip and MPhil/PhD programmes in History of Art, as well as related School of Arts programmes such as BA Creative Arts.
Anticipating that applicants may adopt a global or post-nationalist stance in their research practice, we do not specify any regional specialism(s) within Asia, the Middle East and Africa. We would still like to encourage applications from contemporary arts researchers specialising in the expected growth areas of West Africa, South Asia and East Asia and related diaspora cultures. You would be expected to have command of any relevant language(s) and experience of living and/or working in relevant places. The disciplinary specialism within contemporary arts and visual cultures would likely be linked to the regional specialism(s) but might also relate to photography and video art or curating and/or cultural industries. Curating is an area of interest given our developing MA programme in this field and the resource of the Brunei Gallery at SOAS, while film is a growing strength of the Centre for Creative Industries, Media and Screen Studies (CCIMSS) within the School of Arts, which hosts a major ERC grant, ‘African Screen Worlds’. An ability to teach art theory relevant to the creative arts and/or cultural industries and to foster and develop practice-based learning and teaching is highly desirable.
