The Johns Hopkins Department of the History of Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine invites applications for tenure-trackfacultyat the rank ofAssistant orAssociateProfessor.TheDepartmentis committed to broadening the history of health and medicine,andseeksnew colleagues who address areas not covered by existing faculty, specifically in the areas ofpre-modern medicine, health, and healing before 1800, andinmedicine, health and healing inEast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, or other geographical areas which would extend the reach of our Department. We seek scholars whose research is innovative and agenda-setting. Ourteachingremit stretches across several divisions of the University, including Ph.D. and online MA studentswithin our department’s degree-granting programs,MD and MPH students within the broader schools of medicine and public health at Johns Hopkins, and undergraduates and graduate studentsthrough joint appointment in the Program of History of Science, Medicine, and Technology at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Founded in 1929, the Institute of the History of Medicine is dedicated to promoting scholarship on the history of medicine, disease, and the health sciences, and their relation to society, and to fostering a lively and collegial intellectual community. In addition, the Institute seeks tobring historical perspectives to bear on contemporary health issues. Faculty members teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the Schools of Medicine, Arts and Sciences, and Public Health. The Institute possesses an extensive collection of primary and secondary sources on the history of medicine. The collection is a valuable resource for department faculty and students and attracts visiting scholars from around the world.

A successful candidate will bring energy and enthusiasm to this broad array of learners and be successful at reaching a range of audiences. In addition toexcellence in historical scholarship and teaching, they should also demonstrate the capacity to communicate the enduring relevance of historical analysis to potential audiences in clinical practice, health policy, and the general public.
