The Institute of Religious Studies seeks candidates for a full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Religions of East Asia (Japan and/or Korea). The Institute of Religious Studies is recognized internationally for its leadership in research and teaching in the overlapping fields of the sciences of religions, theology, and spirituality. Responsibilities
The appointed candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise graduate students, be active in research, publishing, and the diffusion of knowledge, and contribute to the activities of the University.
Requirements Doctorate in Religious Studies, or equivalent, with an expertise in at least one of the following religions of East Asia: Japanese Buddhism and/or Korean Buddhism, Shintoism.

In the context of this specialty, expertise in one or more of the following related areas:
o Texts on religious, spiritual, or philosophical thought
o Religion and politics
o Religion and art
o Religion and mythology
o Religious rituals
o Religious experience


Ability to teach undergraduate introductory courses on the religions of East Asia in general Fluency in either Japanese or Korean (classical and/or modern)
Capacity to develop state-of-the-art research in the area of expertise
Capacity to work in synergy with the humanities and social sciences
Excellent dossier of scientific publications
Excellency in university teaching
An adequate knowledge of the French written and spoken language, or a strong commitment to mastering the proficiency level required, in accordance to Université de Montréal’s Language Policy. An institutional learning support program is offered to all professors wishing to learn French or improve their communication skills.

  • A selection of three articles or book chapters (peer reviewed)
  • The doctoral thesis
  • Three letters of recommendation are also to be sent directly to the department chair by the referees.
