UCI is unique in providing students the ability to earn simultaneously a disciplinary Ph.D. (i.e. Art History/Visual Studies) while receiving an interdisciplinary credential in Persian/Iranian studies through the PhD Specialization in Ancient Iran and the Premodern Persianate World. Students should apply to the PhD program in Visual Studies, and once accepted, pursue the Specialization. Current faculty strengths include Achaemenid through Sasanian art and archaeology (including Hellenistic and Kushan Central Asia), and Islamic art and architecture of medieval through early modern Iran and Persianate Central and South Asia.

All accepted students at UCI are guaranteed a six-year funding package, which provides a tuition scholarship, living stipend, summer funding and access to subsidized graduate housing.Students pursuing Persian/Iranian studies are supported by endowed fellowships that provide additional resources. In addition, Visual Studies students have opportunities to apply for field research funding, and paid curatorial internships at institutions such as the Louvre, the Smithsonian, and other prominent national and international entities.
