Hong Kong has been studied mainly as a colonial and capitalist enclave, often with an emphasis on economic and diplomatic history. However, Hong Kong has also been a center of press and publications in Chinese ever since the early colonial period. Print capitalism and the relative protection provided by the colonial authorities to freedom of expression nurtured generations of intellectuals, who engaged with national, as well as local and global issues. Far from being a “cultural desert,” Hong Kong has long represented an offshore public sphere or civil society in modern and contemporary Chinese history. At the same time, considering Hong Kong only as an offshore or marginal space in China’s orbit is also a methodological limitation that should be questioned and reconsidered. Intellectuals in Hong Kong were repeatedly confronted with local issues and home-grown social movements, as well as global questions in the context of World War II or the Cold War. This seminar proposes to return to Hong Kong in the perspective of intellectual and cultural history, paying close attention to the question of local, national, and global scales.
This research seminar will be held in English. It is open to graduate students with prior knowledge of Chinese history and politics.
