The ICAS Book Prize was established in 2004 by the International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS), whose Secretariat is housed at the offices of the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) in Leiden, the Netherlands. The IBP’s language basis has diversified since 2016, and in addition to the existing English Edition, the IBP also honours publications in Chinese, Korean, French and German.

The Groupement d’intérêt scientifique Études asiatiques (GIS Asie) (French Edition) has been one of the partner institutions of ICAS and organizes the competition for books on Asia, published in French since 2016.


The third edition (2021)

For the second edition, 21 books were submitted. The Reading Committee comprised of 4 experts from the scientific committee – Vincent Goossaert (EPHE), Matthias Hayek (CRCAO), David Picherit (CNRS), Louise Pichard-Bertaux (IrAsia). – who selected a shortlist of 5 volumes that were presented during the joint conference ICAS – GIS Asie held in Kyoto by 24th of August 2021.

The French book prize was awarded to Aurore Candier for her monography La réforme politique en Birmanie pendant le premier moment colonial (1819-1878), published by EFEO Editions.


The second edition (2019)

For the second edition, 36 books were submitted. The Reading Committee comprised of 4 experts from the scientific committee – Vatthana Pholsena (CNRS), Vincent Goossaert (EPHE), David Picherit (CNRS) et Michael Lucken (INALCO) – who selected a shortlist of 5 volumes that were presented during the joint conference ICAS – GIS Asie held in Leiden by 16th of July 2019.

The French book prize was awarded to Marianne Bujard and Michèle Pirazzoli for their monography «Les Dynasties Qin et Han: Histoire générale de la Chine (221 av. J.-C.-220 apr. J.-C.)», published by éditions des Belles Lettres.

For the first edition, 30 books were submitted. The Reading Committee comprised of 4 experts from the scientific committee, who selected a shortlist of 5 volumes that were presented at the 6th Congrès Asie in June 2017.

The French book prize was awarded to Marine Carrin for her monography:
“Le parler des dieux. Le discours ritual santal entre l’oral et l’écrit (Inde)”, published by Société d’ethnologie.
