*4-year PhD position (100%) on the cultural logistics of Chinese science fiction* at the Department of Geosciences,Geography Unit, University of Fribourg, Switzerland

This PhD position is part of a Swiss National Science Foundation grant titled “The cultural logistics of Chinese science fiction” (2021-2025). The project aims to shed light on the rise of Chinese science fiction by examining the relationships between its fictional speculation, shared imaginary practices, and networks of discursive and material circulation. The PhD student will analyze the discursive and material production of Chinese SF literature beyond the text with a focus on publishing houses, conventions, theme parks and fandom.

Job description

* Ethnographic fieldwork in the PRC

* Publication of one or more scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals

* Writing up of PhD thesis (monograph or publication-based)

* Co-organization of conference panels and international conference

* Support of PI in grant administration

Qualifications

* A Master’s degree with specialization in human geography, social anthropology, Chinese studies or other relevant fields

* Strong background in social theory

* Experience in ethnography as a methodology

* Interest and ability to work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary manner

* Native speaker or fluent in Mandarin Chinese, very good language skills in English

Conditions of employment

The initial appointment will be for 12 months extendible to 4 years. Gross salary is in the range of 47-50K CHF per year (100%) and follows the salary scale of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
