The Sarah M. Bekker Burma Essay Prize (2020)

The Burma Studies Foundation announces the Sarah M. Bekker Burma Essay Prize for 2020. The prize of US$500 is awarded for the best academic essay of no more that 10,000 words on a subject dealing with Burma/Myanmar. The prize is open to graduate students

in any academic field who are currently registered at a university or college. There are no citizenship or residence requirements.

To apply

  1. Send an electronic copy of your paper (pdf format) towheatley@mit.edu.
  2. Have your academic advisor send an email towheatley@mit.educertifying that the paper submitted is original research. [This emailed note can simply be a few lines such as: “Maung Shwe You, a student working under my supervision, is submitting a paper, based on original research, for the Burma Essay Prize”, signed by your advisor.]

Receipt of your paper and your advisor’s certification will be confirmed by email. (If you do not get confirmation, see “queries”below.)

Timeline

  1. Your entry should be written in English, and emailed no later thanFebruary 29 (sic), 2020.
  2. The decision of the Prize Committee will be made byJune 1, 2020.
  3. The winner will be notified immediately, and the prize will be awarded at the 2020 Burma Studies Conference to be held at the Center for Burma Studies, Northern Illinois University, inOctober 2020. The decision of the judges is final. The essay will be reviewed for publication in theJournal of Burma Studies.
