The Project: Democratic Alliance in the Indo-Pacific (DAIP)
The Asia-Pacific region, recently renamed Indo-Pacific to better incorporate the Indian subcontinent, was, until the war in Ukraine, the main area of geopolitical tension in a world order undergoing ideological reconfiguration, in which liberal democracy is increasingly challenged. The region remains a priority for the Western world, even if its attention and means are temporarily diverted. Led by a team of specialists of the English-speaking world, this project aims to analyze how, based on perennial and firm alliances (Five Eyes Alliance, 1941; ANZUS, 1951), established in times of conflict (World Wars I and II, the Cold War), Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom are strengthening their partnerships and their deployment in the region, politically, militarily, economically and culturally, with France also playing its part. From the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (2007) to AUKUS (2021), through the strengthening of strategic and cultural alliances with Asian allies, notably Japan, South Korea and India, the Western allies are seeking to take the leadership of the democratic group in the face of Chinese expansionism and the new Beijing-Moscow axis. However, their interests are not always convergent and, beyond great power competition and the resurrection of an ideological confrontation, their respective domestic political interests can hamper the cohesion and effectiveness of the alliance.
The Team:
To tackle the three interrelated issues/themes of increased cooperation between allies, defence and promotion of democracy/ democratic values (norms, standards), and domestic determinants of foreign policy, the project brings together specialists of international relations and history of several English-speaking world countries (Australia, UK, US) from the Laboratoire d’Études et de Recherche sur le Monde Anglophone (LERMA, UR 853) and the Observatory of international relations of English-speaking countries (OREMA, after its French name), which is part of LERMA.

Your Missions:
Working in close collaboration with the project leader, Isabelle Vagnoux, but also with the whole team, you will have three main missions. First, the person recruited is expected to contribute to the research on the subject and to publish/help publish a variety of papers and contributions in peer-reviewed journals, the project’s online report or open access media such as our OREMA blog, among others. Second, he/she will also prepare the scheduled events, workshops and conferences and be in charge of all technical aspects, for instance when scheduled in distance or hybrid form. He/She will also attend relevant online events and write a summary of the main ideas. Third, he/she will manage and improve the project’s outreach. This will involve generating relevant content for social media platforms but also spearheading the development of the OREMA blog.
