International

The French Academic Networks (Groupements d’Intérêts Scientifiques – GIS) were assigned a mission by the CNRS to support the internationalization of French research in the humanities and in the social sciences. Since its inception, the GIS Asie has designed a strategy and implemented a series of actions to enhance the international visibility of Asian studies, to support international collaborations and develop joint research initiatives with foreign scientific partners.

5 French Research Institutes located in Asia

The GIS Asie includes among its members the 5 French Research Institutes located in Asia, that are jointly run by the CNRS and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They are meant to play a major role in terms of internationalization. These are:

- Hong-Kong: French Centre for Research on Contemporary China / Centre d’études français sur la Chine contemporaine (CEFC)

- New Delhi: Centre for Social Sciences and Humanities / Centre de Sciences humaines (CSH)

- Puducherry (South India): French Institute of Pondicherry / Institut Français de Pondichéry (IFP)

- Bangkok: Research Institute on Contemporary Southeast Asia / Institut de recherche sur l'Asie du sud-est Contemporaine (IRASEC)

- Tokyo: French Research Institute on Japan at the Maison franco-japonaise / Institut Français de recherche sur le Japon à la Maison franco-japonaise

These institutes host senior and junior researchers who come on a short term basis. They also have permanent support and research staff. They are precious platforms to establish, maintain and develop collaborations with academic communities in Asia.

Based on bilateral agreements between France and a partner country, it funds joint research projects between a French research team and one in the partner country. They are developed as part of the support to science and technology by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.

Unités mixtes des instituts français de recherche à l’étranger - UMIFRE
French Research Centres abroad - a network of 27 research institutions jointly run by the CNRS and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs —launch regular calls for residencies for PhD, post-doctoral and senior researchers. See the websites list above.

National Centre for Scientific Research - CNRS
The CNRS offers 4 tools to fund research that aim at initiating, developing and supporting scientific collaborations at the European and international levels.

French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development - IRD

The French National Research Agency – ANR
The ANR provides funding for project-based research in all fields of science in France. It is comprised of 5 departments, including one for the social sciences and humanities. Every year there is a call for generic projects: http://www.agence-nationale-recherche.fr/AAPG2019
It offers tools to fund research projects for early stage researchers (JCJC), collaborative projects in France (PRC) and with international partners (PRCI).

Horizon 2020 - H2020
Horizon 2020 is the framework programme that funds research, technological development, and innovation, implemented by the European Union (2014-2020). The French Ministry for Higher Education, Research and Innovation maintains a network of national referees (PCN): they provide expertise in assisting researchers based in France to apply for project funding. The network also aims at informing scholars about opportunities for funding under the H2020 framework.
