Since modern European-defined art emerged in Southeast Asia in the late 19th century, various contributors—artists, scholars, critics, curators, and others—have shaped its art scenes. Despite this, art historical discourse has focused mainly on art creation and creators. This symposium redirects attention to private patronage, examining its influence on art ecologies and historical narratives in 20th and 21st century Southeast Asia. It seeks to foster comparative perspectives on the topic within the region.
